NOLWENN BRODBorn in 1987, Nolwenn Brod is a French artist based in Paris. A member of the Vu agency since 2016, she has been represented by galerie VU' since 2014.
Nolwenn Brod's photography is phenomenological, placing the experience of encounter at the heart of the creative process. It all began in Ireland in the footsteps of her father (Va-t'en me perdre où tu voudras, 2015 - Poursuite Editions), then in cities with industrial or port pasts, affected by war: Lodz, Warsaw, Gdansk in Poland, Beirut in Lebanon and more recently Brest in Brittany.
The subject is often the representation of an inner struggle, a duel, the forms created by conflicting forces. Each portrait, each individual case, is necessary; photographic bodies make up society. The meticulous observation of significant everyday gestures, micro-sensation, micro-events, the lability of the present moment between beings and their ontology nourish his work. With, on, under and through are all conjunctions with which to apprehend the environment and inhabitants in and with whom she works.
Projects are often nurtured by literary companionship: Witold Gombrowicz's structuralism of the street accompanied her in Poland during the making of Temps de l'immaturité (2018-21, in progress); in Creuse, on the lines of Gilles Deleuze, she composed the photographs for La Ritournelle (2015-16); more recently, Jean-Luc Nancy, Charles S. Peirce and Tanguy Viel inspired Les Hautes solitudes à Brest (2021-22 in progress).
She develops her projects as part of creative residencies in France and Europe, where she mixes photography and video, and also carries out commissions for the press and institutions.
Her work is regularly exhibited in France and Europe, and can be found in the collections of the Bnf, the Musée Nicéphore Niépce, the Musée de Bretagne, the Villa Noailles, the Agnès b collection, the Neuflize OBC fonds d'entre- prise, artothèques and private collections.
Her first book was published by Editions Poursuite in 2015, with the second in preparation (Les hautes solitudes).
