Five stimulating days making a personal series with Jane Evelyn Atwood will be an exciting experience to narrow down desires, explore a theme without getting lost and cleverly select your own photographs to tell a story.
The workshop is largely based on practice. In enthusiastic, sincere discussions about the photographs taken each day, everyone will be able to concretely identify the aspects that need to be improved and deepened, to search and to explore without getting scattered.
Whatever the nature of the photographs taken—sensitive, rooted in reality or more conceptual, based on a place, a person or a social fact—coherence, dialogue and the search for meaning will be at the heart of the discussions and the focus of attention.
Ms. Atwood's largely individualized help and advice will depend on each participant’s progress, sensitivity, commitment and personal goals.
At the height of summer, they will be able to draw on contacts and locations (social, environmental and sports organizations and institutions, farms, communities, companies, craftsmen, etc.) pre-established by the Rencontres d'Arles and jointly determined on the first day.
Dispelling doubts, finding the right attitude, knowing how to listen, feeling and finding a narrative's leitmotiv will be addressed. After a final editing session, the photographs will be printed and exhibited on the workshop's last day.

JANE EVELYN ATWOOD
Lives and works in Paris, France.
Jane Evelyn Atwood’s work attests to the close relationships she has forged with her subjects over long stretches of time. Fascinated by people and the idea of exclusion, she manages to enter worlds most of us ignore or choose to ignore. She is the author of 10 books (the latest are Pigalle People, 1978-1979 and Le Bec en l'air, 2018) and her work has won prestigious international awards. In 2011, the Maison européenne de la Photographie in Paris hosted her first major retrospective. In 2018, she exhibited at the Rencontres d'Arles.

BRING
- A selection of around 30 images attesting to your practice (preferably on paper/format of your choice)
- Your camera, charger and cables
- 2 or 3 memory cards
- A Mac-compatible hard drive or your computer if you wish

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Number of participants: 6 to 8 (12 maximum if health situtation allows)
- Begins: 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday
- Ends: 7:00 p.m. on  Friday (it followed by an exhibition until 9:30 pm)
- Location: historic center near the Arles arena
- Access : stairs. 3 floors.

GOALS
- Learn the various steps involved in creating a photo series
- Develop a point of view based on a selection of photographs

TEACHING METHOD
- Teaching staff : a professional photographer instructor, helped by an assistant from 6 attenders
- Logistic staff to facilitate shooting sessions (places, material, contacts…)
- Workshop held in both French and English :
Collective parts in French with a translation for non-French speakers.
One-to-one interviews could be in English.

- A photo library (app. 500 references)

EVALUATION
- Private end-of-course interview and evaluation
- The instructor continuously evaluates the personal series
