Soudan 2019 année zéro (Sudan 2019 Year Zero)

On April 11, 2019, the dictatorial and Islamist regime of Omar al-Bashir, in charge in Khartoum for thirty years, was overthrown by a popular movement. During the previous four months, the sit-in installed in the heart of the capital had been the target of the so-called "security forces", as well as the crucible of the intellectual, political and artistic ferment where  and artistic ferment where the revolutionary dream of a democratic Sudan took shape. After the fall of the dictator, negotiations stalled between the junta that succeeded him and the opposition, which was hostile to a military-led transition. On June 3, the junta bloodily destroyed the sit-in. But on June 30, the "Million Man March" showed the determination of the Sudanese people and their deep desire for democracy. Following international mediation, negotiations restarted and led in August to the creation of a transitional government, made up of civilians and military, which is mandated to lead the country until elections are held, scheduled for 2022. This book captures that suspended moment, that "year zero". The photographs and most of the texts in the book are by Sudanese men and women. It relates the steps of the rebellion from the inside, from the most enthusiastic to the most tragic. Sometimes fiery, even lyrical, it is often poignant.
